For over thirty years, the
Jamestown Rotary Club has supported a number of causes in the community
and around the world with the proceeds of it annual bike race. We have
made contributions to the Food Pantry, provided Thanksgiving Baskets for
needy families, helped build playgrounds, a nature trail, and historic
and memorial sites in Jamestown, provided scholarships, sponsored
essay contests, supported projects for scouts and recreational sports,
cultural visits, student
exchange programs, immunization clinics and a host of youth and senior
projects to assist people in need.
In recent years, the proceeds from the Jamestown Classic have reached
beyond the borders of the island
to third world countries. Our 25th annual event provided 23 homes for needy
families in Southern India helping to bring stability to lives that would
otherwise be spent under a piece of cardboard in the street. Subsequent
races provided funds for uninsured victims of 9/11, janitors and service
personnel not covered by insurance. Last year, some of the the proceeds
from our race resulted in 280 wheelchairs being given to needy handicapped
men, women and children in Nicaragua as part of an annual mission to that
region co-directed by one of our Jamestown Rotarians.
